Winter Wolves These Photographs were taken early this winter on a trip to the International Wolf Center in Ely, Minnesota. These two are a subspecies of the gray wolf; the arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos). While at the center I met a French wolf expert, who works at a similar facility in France with European wolves. It was also very interesting simply observing the wolves and realizing how alert they are and how intelligent they are as well. While they had many of the behaviors we may be familiar with concerning domestic dogs, the wolves seemed to take these to a higher level. One thing I really noticed was how alert and observant they are. Whenever a raven would fly overhead the wolves would always look up and watch the bird until it flew out of site. I've seldom seen this with a domestic dog; it seems they hardly ever look up. I came away feeling there's much more going on in the head of a wolf, besides the sixteen hundred pounds per square inch of biting force (we humans have a mere three hundred pounds, and a german shepard dog has seven hundred and fifty). They are truly intelligent and magnificent animals, and well deserve our respect and protection. All the pictures on this page are available for purchase.
